Alice has a great feature -- the syntax switch. Turn on Java style with the Edit/Preferences menu. In Java style, all the punctuation shows up. This prepares the student for transition to coding in Java.

Note that you may need to restart Alice for the switch to take effect.

The "Learn to Program with Alice" book goes over the syntax switch on page 280. We consider this to be the best Alice book and highly recommend it for self-study.
